For someone like me whose record collection at age 11 consisted of a few dozen pop music 45-rpm singles, it was a shock to discover that in Europe in the 1950s and 60s, there was a market for classical music singles. Most were EP (extended play) discs, meaning they took the size of the typical 45 rpm, but played at 33-1/3 rpm. Here is a sampling of some of these little cultural curiosities.
